Reclining Buddha Image at Ruins of Wat Lokayasutha

  • Wat Lokayasutha is the name for the Temple of the Reclining Buddha. This has the largest reclining Buddha statue in Ayutthaya which is made of bricks and mortar and painted with white wash. Wat Lokayusutha is situated near the Palace grounds and Wat Phra Si Sanphet on the western side of Khlong Tho. The Buddha image is 8 meters height and 42 meters long and is located at what was the rear of the Temple. The statue has been restored in 1956.
  • In the later part of the Ayutthaya period reclining Buddhas were considered important and this is confirmed by the location of this image so close to the Palace Grounds.
  • Also to be seen here are the brick foundations of the temple buildings which include a large Vihara with front and rear porticos of 20.1 by 49.5 meters and the smaller viharas to the left side and right side each 13.2 by 35.4 meters and 14.1 by 36.5 meters.
  • The main Prang (tower) of Wat Lokayasutha which can be seen in the image here is 30 meters high. The foundations next to it are those of the Ordination Hall which was 33 by 17 meters.
  • The Statue itself was originally housed in a large Vihara which was destroyed and its foundations can be seen around the Statue.
