Mount Batur Bali

Mount Batur Bali

  • Mount Batur was created by a volcanic eruption in the year 1917. It’s active even these days, secondary volcanic cone creating many secondary apertures around its sides. It is at an altitude of 1,717 metres above sea level.
  • Since 1804, the eruptions of Mount Batur have been noted and since then 22 volcanic eruptions have taken place. Since 1917, Mount Batur has erupted 3 more times (in 1926, in 1974 and in 1994), on each occurrence moving a little more to the west, making new sub craters which are known as Batur I, II and III respectively.
  • As it expands due to frequent volcanic eruptions, it gradually expands its base at the expense of the lake that is gradually shrinking as a result.
  • With a height of 1,746 metres, Mount Penulisan forms the 2nd highest point of the crater rim. There is the strange Pura Tegeh Koripan here which is the highest and perhaps also the oldest temple of Bali.
  • The Bali Aga village of Trunyan is located in a remote area along the eastern coast of Lake Batur, at the foot of Mount Abang which is at a height of 2,152 meters.
