The Mughal emperor Akbar was the greatest of the Mughal emperors and among the most secular minded rulers of his time. Akbar was a great patron of science, philosophy, literature and arts. The tomb was planned by Akbar himself and he chose a suitable site for it. It was a tradition to build a tomb in one's lifetime and the Mughals followed devotedly. This pyramidal tomb was completed by Akbar's son Jahangir in 1613.
