Famen Temple

  • Famen Temple was built around the dagoba. It became world famous by holding many events preserving the relic of Sakyamuni's finger bone. Here the most symbolic structures are the Famen Temple Museum and Famen Temple Pagoda.
  • There is 13-tiered octagonal pagoda at its center. It was noticed in 1981 that the pagoda was slowly sinking into the ground. This resulted in reconstruction, during which an Underground Palace was discovered in 1987. Presently, this is the biggest Buddhist underground palace found so far. Many royal jewelry and treasures were found here. The most valuable thing was the real Finger Bone of the Sakyamuni Buddha.
  • Estimating from the impressive architectural style, the Underground Palace is considered to have been constructed during the Tang Dynasty. Emperors during the Tang and Sui thought that worshiping and preserving the bone of Sakyamuni would bring peace and wealth to the territory and its people.
  • Famen Temple Museum was launched in 1987. Silks, porcelain, coloured glaze wares and Gold and silverware are on display. The area of exhibition has been increased from 500 square metres to 3,000 square metres.

Namaste Dagoba

  • After construction for 3 years, Namaste Dagoba was completed in 2009. The dagoba is148 metres high. The numbers "148" were selected because the "1", shows that the Buddha is not different from all other beings. The "4" and "8" show the 8th day of the 4th lunar month which is the birthday of Buddha. The construction design of Namaste Dagoba indicates the Buddhist idea of peace, concord harmony and unification.
